Police have laid charges in the murders of a former Hells Angel, his brother and his brother’s wife.
Leslie Douglas Greenwood has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting of Barry Kirk Mersereau and Nancy Paula Christensen in 2000. He is also charged with the attempted murder of ex-Hells Angel Randy Mersereau in 1999 and being an accessory after the fact in the murder of Randy Mersereau later that same year.
RCMP arrested Greenwood without incident at a residence in Bramber, Hants County at 12:30 a.m. Thursday, RCMP provincial spokeswoman Sgt. Brigdit Leger said.
The 41-year-old who has no fixed address was held overnight and taken to Halifax provincial court Friday for arraignment on the charges. He remained in cells during the brief proceeding as duty counsel John Black appeared on his behalf. The lawyer waived reading of the charges and the case was moved to Truro provincial court on Jan. 11 to set a date for a preliminary hearing. Greenwood was ordered to jail until that time.
Crown Shauna MacDonald said the case was heard in Halifax only because the Truro court wasn’t sitting on Friday.
Believed to be suffering from cancer, Greenwood has a series of convictions for offences, including drug possession, theft, break and enter, fraud, forgery, possessing a restricted or prohibited weapon, possessing a device to obtain telecommunication service and piracy.
Spokeswoman Leger answered few questions about the continuing investigation, but she did say that Greenwood was known to all three victims.
Kirk Mersereau and his wife Nancy were shot execution-style in their home in Centre Burlington, Hants Co. A neighbour discovered their bodies on Sept. 10, 2000. The couple's 18-month-old son was in his crib, unharmed.
In their book, The Road to Hell: How the Biker Gangs are Conquering Canada, journalists William Marsden and Julian Sher wrote that Kirk Mersereau had issued a $50,000 contract on the heads of those he held responsible for the murder of his brother, Randy.
A founding member of the Halifax chapter of the Hells Angels, Randy Mersereau left the gang in the ’90s and set up his own drug network. In the book, it’s suggested that he hooked up with a rival biker gang, the Bandidos, and it was rumoured that he had put a contract out on Hells Angels Nomads David (Wolf) Carroll and Maurice (Mom) Boucher and Halifax Hells Angel Michael McCrea.
On Sept. 23, 1999, a bomb exploded at a Bible Hill car dealership, injuring several people. Randy Mersereau escaped with his life, but his luck wouldn’t last long. He went missing on Oct. 31, 1999 and police uncovered human remains believed to belong to Randy Mersereau last Sunday in a wooded area off Hiram Lynds Road in North River, Colchester County.
Biker informant Dany Kane, now deceased, told investigators that the biker gang had Randy Mersereau shot dead and buried him with the gun used to kill him.
Leger said that officers are still working with the medical examiner’s office to determine the identity of the remains found and the exact cause of death.
Last week, RCMP arrested Gerald MacCabe and charged the 43-year-old Salmon River, Colchester Co. man with being an accessory after the fact in the murder of Randy Mersereau. Documents filed in Truro provincial court repeat the claims made in the Halifax court files: that Jeffrey Lynds murdered Mersereau.
But Lynds, a Colchester County man who became a full-patch Hells Angel in 2001, has not been charged in the murder of Randy Mersereau. In fact, no one has been charged in that killing.
Leger wouldn’t say whether they’re looking at charging Lynds or anyone else in relation to this crime.
Lynds and two other Halifax Hells Angels went to jail in 2003 for drug dealing, in a case that led to the collapse of the Halifax chapter later that same year. After his release, Lynds joined the Nomads in Ontario. RCMP arrested him May 30 in Bible Hill in the murder of two men in Montreal on Jan. 24. Police said they found a loaded handgun on him at the time.
As for other Hells Angels whose names surfaced in these cases, Boucher is in prison serving time for a series of other murders and Carroll is still listed as wanted by police on other charges, including murder.
McCrea, whom police have alleged was the president of the Halifax Hells Angels chapter, has never been charged. The father of one previously told this newspaper that he was simply a member of the club. He retired from the gang when the Halifax chapter collapsed. He later underwent cancer treatment and is working for a local company

East Mountain , North River , Bible Hill
TRURO – East Mountain resident Les Greenwood has been charged with first-degree murder in the 2000 shooting deaths of Barry Kirk Mersereau and his common-law wife Nancy Christensen
Greenwood, 41, has also been charged with accessory after the fact to murder in the homicide of outlaw biker Randy Mersereau (Kirk's brother) and with Randy Mersereau's attempted murder in the September 2000 bombing of a used car dealership in Bible Hill, which left several people injured.
Greenwood has been remanded into custody and appeared in provincial court in Halifax on Friday to face the charges. He is reportedly being held in provincial jail in Amherst until his next scheduled court appearance in Truro Jan. 11.
RCMP major crimes spokeswoman Sgt. Bridgit Leger said he was arrested without incident at a residence in Bramber, Hants County early Thursday morning.
Hells Angel member Jeff Lynds of North River has been named by police as Randy Mersereau's killer while Salmon River resident Gerald MacCabe has been charged as an accessory for allegedly helping Lynds escape custody. There has been no indication from police that Lynds has been charged with Mersereau's murder but Legere has repeatedly stated that the court documents relating to him are correct as filed.
Kirk Mersereau was 48 and Christensen was 47 when they were gunned down in their Hants County home in September 2000. Their 18-month-old son was found in his crib, unharmed.
The investigation into Randy Mersereau's death renewed in earnest in October when RCMP spent a week searching an Onslow Mountain home. Then, last week, the investigation moved to North River, and on Sunday, after several days of searching, police discovered skeletal human remains in a wooded area off the Hiram Lynds Road.
Leger said those remains have yet to be identified.
"The RCMP continue to work with the medical examiner to positively identify the remains as well as determine the cause of death."
Shortly after Mersereau disappeared in October 1999, Lynds became a full-patch member of the Hells Angels and was later named by police as having moved on to the outlaw bike gang's elite Nomad chapter in Ontario.
At last report, Lynds was in custody in a Montreal jail where he is facing first-degree charges in a double homicide.
Just prior to the slayings of Kirk Mersereau and Christensen, West Colchester resident Charles Robert Maddison also suddenly disappeared.
His bank account remained untouched and his 1989 Dodge Dakota truck was found burned in a remote gravel pit 40 kilometres from the Mersereau/Christensen murder scene, which prompted police to look for a possible link. A police spokesperson at the time suggested if there was a connection, it would be a case of Maddison being an innocent victim of a criminal offence.
When asked on Friday about the Maddison investigation, Leger said she could not offer specifics.
"I can't disclose any information about any specific file that may be under investigation. I can confirm that these three investigations here are still very much ongoing. As with any missing persons files in the province of Nova Scotia they remain open and are actively reviewed by the investigators," she said.
Greenwood, who until recently lived at 882 Pictou Rd. in East Mountain, has a criminal history for such offences as possessing a restricted or prohibited weapon, drug possession, fraud, forgery theft, break and enter and of possessing a device to obtain telecommunication service and piracy.
He has also long been the cause of consternation among some of his East Mountain neighbours because of the unsightly condition of his property.
During a dangerous and unsightly hearing at Colchester County council in April 2009, one neighbour described Greenwood's property as "disgraceful" and a "safety hazard" because of the accumulation of automotive parts, junk, debris and wood scattered throughout the yard. Greenwood was ordered by the county on a number of occasions to have the property cleaned up and after fire destroyed his home last year, a mobile trailer was placed on the lot.
The county ultimately informed Greenwood that mobile trailers cannot be used as a permanent residence and it has been removed from the property.
Some residents in the area have reported seeing a vehicle with Quebec license plates parked at various locations in the area this week, but Leger said she had no information whether the vehicle was linked to the case. But neither does she believe that residents are in any danger because of the ongoing events.
"We do not believe that these are random," she said of the three deaths. "The accused and the victims were known to each other and at this point in time we do not believe that there is any additional risk to the general public."
