Jeff and I went to the Southampton Honey Hole on the last day of trout season, Sept. 30. We didn't catch anything, despite this being a very productive fishing spot all summer long. Then I discovered a ton of bear crap all over the rocks at the best spot on the river - so the bears know this is a honey hole too! Anyway, I think they got all of the fish. Does anyone know what they are eating that has pits in it? All the bear crap we see this time of year has pits in it, like cherry pits. Jeff is in this pic, in the water with waders.

Not positive but it sounds the same as the evidence around my site - educated guess though without picking through it would be high bush cranberries. And its only the last day if you don't have a salmon license - picking mine up first of the week and fishing River Philip the following Mark

looks like coon crap to me Some of it was small, but some of it had a very large diameter. I was thinking maybe a mother bear with cubs. But it could be coons - we've got a family living under Dick's shed and they crap right outside of it - some of it is pretty big. But the big piles of bear crap we see over in Sunnyside has the same pits in it. Some of the crap on the rocks in Southampton had no pits and it looked exactly like the coon crap out by the shed. Maybe it's both critters? Or maybe the coons are eating cranberries too. I'm gonna have to dig out my poop book. lol

Coons can be pretty messy but berries are not a real big staple in their diet - the pics above are very similar to my bear bait site ( and lots there from the damn sow and cubs ) And was that Jeff's accident or a bear

Maybe the coon shat on top of where the bears shat. lol Looks like two different kinds of crap to me - the crap that looks like small dog might be coon crap, and the crap full of pits might be bear. Yeah Mark Jeff had a big breaky that day.

Opened in Sept but just hearing of the odd one being caught now. I travel with a buddy of mine who lives fly fishing and knows the river well. He's off on vacation the week of the 12th so we hope to be on the river often.
This rain though a pain the arse is good for the fish as they will be moving up the river.

Koolz on the fishing Mark, any size to the Brown?? I'll be ready for next season...gotta take the Hardy reels out and dust them off, spool some new line on 'em, clean up the Orvis rods and get back into Fly Fishing, it's been about 15 years since I laid a fly on the water...

Nah... approx 11 - 12 " brown, so no significant fight but fun. I'm still a novice to fly fishing. Caught my first 4.5lb salmon last year on the Lomond River in NFLD. Most definitely want to go back there - River about 45 min from Deer Lake just on the edge of Gros More ( spelling !?? ) National Park. Mark Knew I had a pic somewhere ;D And I was well into celebrating at the time of the pic
